THE ANCIENT CITY

THE ANCIENT CITY

It was around 7000 BCE that
people likely founded the
city of Jericho, located in
the Middle East. Today, it’s
the world’s oldest continuously
lived-in city. Jericho is near
the Jordan River, and there
are many water springs in and
around the city. Having water
close by was important to early
people for drinking, washing
and watering crops that grew
in the elds around the city.
The population grew, and people
began to live closer together.
Of course, there were
problems, too, so cities learned
to deal with crime, diseases,
pollution and other issues.
Governments formed to look
after these things.
